Government to keep 2012 Olympic Games logo
The British government has announced that it will be keeping the much-criticised 2012 Olympic Games logo despite public demands for them to change it.
Culture spokesman Lord Davies of Oldham explained that the current logo design "will establish the character and identity of the Games".
But Liberal Democrat Lord Redesdale wanted to know if an open competition involving the public couldn't be considered with a view to creating a new design.
However, in response Lord Davies said the Olympic Games logo is the responsibility of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games.
Lord Redesdale said the bad publicity the logo had gained could result in a loss in sales for the Olympics because much of the financing would come from merchandising.
Lord Davies, however, claimed: "You must at least concede one fact. The purpose of a logo is to identify and bring to everyone's attention the brand in question. This brand has certainly drawn the nation's attention."
Although he said the government shared the concern people had over the video and TV footage of the logo, which had caused people with epilepsy to have fits.
