Former Australia cricket captain Steve Waugh to help at Beijing Olympics
Former Australian cricket captain Steve Waugh has agreed to help his country's team of athletes at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Explaining his suitability for the role Australian Olympic Committee boss John Coates said of Steve Waugh, 41, who had retired in 2004: "Steve is a champion athlete and an inspirational leader."
Steve Waugh, former Wallabies rugby union skipper John Eales and gold medallist swimmer Susie O'Neill make up the team of athlete liaison officers in China in 2008.
John Eales won the World Cup with Australia in 1999 and Susie O'Neill was victorious in the 200m butterfly at the 1996 Atlanta Games and took the 200m freestyle gold in Sydney.
And, with reference to the athletes taking part at Beijing, John Coates added: "At this point we estimate our team will number 507 athletes, many of them first-time Olympians, who will no doubt be nervous and will benefit greatly from the encouragement."
