Fani Halkia brings the Turin Winter Olympics flame
The flame for February's Turin Winter Olympics has been handed over to
Italian officials in Athens and the ceremony took place in the restored
ancient stadium where the modern summer Olympics started in 1896.
Greek athlete Fani Halkia, who won gold in the 400m hurdles in Athens
last year, brought the flame into the venue to light a bronze cauldron.
Fani Halkia was the last of 534 runners who carried the torch on the 10-day relay through Greece.
The Olympic flame was handed over to Turin organising chief Valentino
Castellani at the ceremony attended by Greek President Karolos
Papoulias and the heads of the Greek and Italian Olympic committees.
A total of 10,001 torchbearers will now carry the torch across Italy,
visiting 140 cities, and crossing Italy's neighbouring countries such
as Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland and France.
The Games will run from 10-26 February and will feature around 2,500 athletes.
