Bulgaria pulls out weightlifters from Beijing Olympic Games
The Weightlifting Federation from Bulgaria has decided to pull out its team from the Beijing Olympic Games after 11 lifters failed tests for doping.
Eight men and three women weightlifters are reported to have tested positive for the banned substance methandienon.
They were tested whilst at a training camp earlier this month where they were in preparation for the Beijing Games in August.
The Bulgaria Weightlifting Federation said in a statement they issued: "The federation decided to withdraw the weightlifting team - men and women -from the Olympics."
Bulgaria had wanted to have a new and clean reputation in weightlifting following a series of doping scandals when their team was stripped of three gold medals and sent back to their home country following positive doping tests at the Sydney Games in 2000.
Ivan Stoitsov, who claimed gold twice at last year's world championships, as well as Olympic bronze medallist Velichko Cholakov, were among the Bulgarian weightlifters withdrawn from the Olympics.
