Beijing Olympics boycott urged by Cindy Jackson and Anneka Svenska

cindyjackson Monday, February 13 saw worldwide demonstrations by animal rights supporters protesting about the Chinese fur traders and urging a boycott of the Beijing Olympics.

In London, model, singer and author Cindy Jackson and actress and comedian Anneka Svenska along with MP Roger Gale attended the demonstration held there.

Brought up in Ohio but now living in the UK, Cindy Jackson is also well known for being a vegetarian and committed animal rights supporter.

Sir Paul McCartney and wife Heather are spearheading the campaign after giving an interview to the BBC last November in which Sir Paul called for a boycott and said he was not performing in China as a protest at the skinning alive of dogs, cats and other animals there to supply the fur trade.

Undercover footage by PETA showing animals being skinned alive by Chinese workers sparked the protests and led to Sir Paul's public condemnation of the practice and boycott of China.

Sir Elton John, Chrissie Hynde, Jools Holland, Lulu, George Michael, Carla Lane, Paul Newman and Joanna Lumley are among a long list of celebrities who have written letters to British PM Tony Blair asking him to push the European Union for an EU-wide ban on cat and dog fur.

With the Olympics still years away it remains to be seen what results these protests and boycott will have.

I've learned that this fur practice in China will stop (??????, believe it when I see it), end 2008. Why not as per now, what are the interests, all this dirty money.
watched live peta stuff, and I'm still awake at night, before I go to sleep, knowing and fully aware, that when I close my eyes, animals eyes will be closed forever.
I boycott the Olympics, will not watch it, chucked all chinese stuff out of my house, don't go to chinese restaurants, and find it hard to look asiatic people in the face. I'm 54 and have always been involved in animal protection. Somehow find it incredible that after half a century nothing or little has changed, animal transports everywhere, blood on the german highway, governments doing zilch, to tell you the truth, I WONT MIND DYING RIGHT NOW. I absolutely hate this life and this world. people screaming when they are in agony, their pain is worse than what animals suffer. Pathtic females yearning and crying because they cannot conceive, whilst there are children dying everywhere. Don't like people full stop.

I used to be a trusting person, hippy when I was young and turning into a bitter, dissapointed person. Still can see the beauty of things, but always with bythoughts.

Many people have no idea that the fur coats they wear came at the expense of horrific suffering and death for these beautiful animals. I'm glad that celebrities are using their voice to speak for these animals who can't speak for themselves. More people should see these videos and educate themselves on things that go on behind the fur trade.

I support the anti fur trade campaign.

Anyone who cares more about the animals rather than the hundreds of thousands of Tibeten people and others currently being slaughtered because their faith does not match the Red China's communist regime needs a serious wake up call. Yes it is awfull that thousands of Dogs are now being slaughtered ! But the race of mankind is infinetly more valuable. Their slaughtering humans and selling their Organs on the Medical black market ! Boycott the Beijing Olympics ? OF COURSE ! The Chinese government is just as bad as Stalin and the Edomite Jews (global Elite New World Order) that brought Hitler into power and financed the Second World War !

I am so delighted to see more and more people taking a stand against this horrific cruelty which is going on every minute in China. It is great to see celebrities using their positive influence to stand up for the animals. We need to make as many people as possible aware of what is going on and we need more people to boycott anything which profits China eg. products made there and Chinese restaurants. Let the Chinese know that the rest of the world WILL stand up for the animals who are being tortured! Thanks to everyone who is fighting to end the fur trade keep up the good work.

Good on them!

It is so heartening when celebrities use their influence positively - and what better way than to fight against animals being exploited in such a disgusting manner. If only more people stood up for what they believed to be right, regardless of the consequences. It is so easy to turn a blind eye and live contentedly in ignorance.

I tried to watch the fur farming video's on the PETA website and although I was sickened by what I saw, I wholly recommend that everyone brace themselves and watch it.

No-one should continue peacefully with their lives while this kind of torture is occurring - I for one will not (cannot) sit quietly knowing that millions of animals live and die in such horrible conditions to satisfy the vanity of a select few.

I am very thankful to see this article in the sports section, and anywhere else it appears.
Enough cannot be said about the tortures the animals go through and the attention brought to this horror so that people may be better informed of the truth, is very much appreciated.

I fully agree with the animal right supporters.
In China animals do not have any rights.
This example shows what people are able to do for money. I strongly hope there will be an EU-wide on Chinese fur-products.

This is not a new issue - I started working against the slaughter of dogs and cats, and captive wild animal fur trade coming out of Asia back in the late 1970's but not until Paul spoke out did suddenly the world - in unity cry out and react to the suffering of these animals ! And I am so proud and thankful for the gathering of countries, cities, groups and individuals who have come forward to speak out against this horrific trade ! I can easily say that the majority of us are against the wearing of fur - full stop because of the cruelty involved in the taking of wild animals by leg hold traps and snares - and by shooting, because of the horrible conditions the captive animals are raised and so cruelly killed on fur farms - ! THERE IS JUST NO WAY OF GETTING A FUR COAT, HUMANELY ! And we don't need the fur of these aniamals - let's face it,it was given to them by nature - it belongs to them, it is meant to keep them protected and warm in the wild where they all belong. It isn't any more a means of keeping warm for most - it is a fashion statement, and a cruel one at that ! If we like fur fashion we can now obtain this look by supporting the cruelty free simulated fur that is now available.( even though I don't even like wearing fake fur any more because it looks too real ! ) As for the impact - these animals in Asia would not be bred - stolen, kept in such cruel conditions and die such horrible deaths if it were not for the consumers !

It is up to us to stop supporting this cruelty ! If we take away the demand - they will no longer supply the ' product ' !

Either way - we will keep on educating the public and doing whatever we can to put a huge hold in this industry.
