Balfour Beatty to build Olympics aquatic centre
Eiffel and Hochtief, two of the three construction companies who were candidates as potential builders for the London 2012 Olympics aquatics centre have withdrawn their bids leaving Balfour Beatty as the only contender.
Back in May the three building firms were chosen to compete to build the 20,000-seat arena but only Balfour Beatty is left.
The Olympics aquatics centre was the first main venue to go to the detailed design stage, with construction work expected to begin in mid-2008 and the venue due to for completion in the summer of 2011.
The aquatic centre will have two 50-metre pools, one for training and one for competitive sport, and a diving pool as well.
A spokesman on behalf of the Olympic Delivery Authority explained: "We remain confident that we will appoint a world class construction company,
"We are looking forward to receiving a tender from Balfour Beatty. A huge amount of work is already taking place on the aquatics site itself. "
