Activists protest against IOC and China on Great Wall
Six foreign activists, who were calling for an Independent Tibet, have been held for staging a protest on the Great Wall of China. The protesters also claimed the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was not holding China accountable for human rights abuses.
The demonstration was organised to tie in with China's bid to mark a year before the Beijing Olympic Games start, on 8 August 2008.
Amnesty and Reporters without Borders are amongst other protest groups, who are using the occasion to voice their concerns.
The campaigners who were detained, and who were from Canada, the US and the UK, unveiled a banner that proclaimed: "One World, One Dream, Free Tibet 2008" and "One World, One Dream" is the motto for the Beijing Olympics next year.
The Paris-based organisation Reporters Without Borders, which calls for the release of more than 80 imprisoned journalists and dissidents in China, sent representatives to Beijing who demonstrated near the Olympic headquarters. The protesters wore black T-shirts showing handcuffs instead of the Olympic Rings.
