World Anti-doping Agency consider banning Viagra
The world famous and popular drug Viagra, which is used by men with erectile dysfunction, is under consideration by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) to be added to its list of banned substances in international sports.
Wada think that sildenafil citrate (Viagra) is being used and can be used to enhance athletic performance, particularly in highly polluted cities like London.
Whilst Viagra is prescribed to help treat erectile dysfunction Wada is doing its own research into the drug to see if it also enhances athletic performance.
Wada updates its list of banned drugs every year and could include Viagra ahead of the Olympic Games in London in 2012.
Viagra can help increase the blood supply to muscles, which could be helpful to sprinters for example.
Victor Conte, who was named in the scandal that erupted over the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative (Balco) and supplied drugs to contestants like disgraced sprinters Marion Jones and Dwain Chambers, has said about Viagra: "All my athletes took it".
At present nothing can be done about athletes who have Viagra in their bodies because it is not illegal.
