The Queen to attend Commonwealth Games spectacular opening
Organisers of the Commonwealth Games are promising a spectacular
opening ceremony as the events begin on Wednesday and the Queen will be
opening the Games at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The ceremony starts
at 0900 GMT.
The details have mainly been kept secret but there have been two live
rehearsals, with 50,000 fans at the final public practice.
"The ceremony is not exactly typical and is more inspirational in its
design," said the Games executive producer of ceremonies Andrew Walsh.
"It's contemporary in a lot of ways and we want people to be uplifted by it."
Andrew Walsh continued: "We want people to take away the impression of Melbourne being a creative and vibrant city.
"There's been nearly 6,000 people involved in the making of the
ceremonies and they've done an incredible job to get it where it is.
"We have two audiences - the audience in the stadium of some 70,000 and the television audience.
"The television audience is very important and I've seen what it's like on television and it's incredible."
The music for the ceremony is a brand new Australian work and will be
performed live by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with their guests.
Additional events will be happening outside the stadium alongside the Yarra River.
