Commonwealth Games in Melbourne tickets still on sale
A total of nearly 400,000 tickets are still on sale for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, which begins on Wednesday.
There are 5,000 for the opening ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket
Ground that remain unsold and 200,000 left over for athletics, but
Melbourne officials are pleased at the level of sales so far and Games
chief executive Mike Hooper said: "We're delighted with where we are
at.
"We have had an enormous take-up and have sold over 1.3m tickets which is a record for any Commonwealth Games."
About 19,000 tickets for main events like swimming, diving, gymnastics
and track cycling were purchased by fans in just four hours after they
were released on Monday.
The tickets became available after organisers completed plans for the
positioning of scoreboards and camera platforms at the venues.
Officials are giving away 5,000 tickets for the opening ceremony to
Games volunteers to attempt to make sure the 80,000-capacity Melbourne
Cricket Ground is full.
And there are also still 26,300 tickets left over for the closing ceremony.
