Ten British disabled swimmers are bound for China
Ten of Great Britain's top disability swimmers will be taking part in a
training camp in China as they prepare for the Beijing Olympic Games in
2008.
In the squad are Rhiannon Henry, Dave Roberts and Matt Walker, who will
all compete at the Commonwealth Games and the 10 athletes training
represent a range of disabilities from wheelchair users to the visually
impaired.
The warm-weather camp is situated in Macau near Hong Kong, and will
give the swimmers the chance to test the facilities on offer there.
The Macau complex is a possible venue for the team's Paralympic holding camp in another two years.
"This camp is about preparing for Beijing," said Disability Swimming performance director Tim Reddish.
"We have taken a cross-section of athletes and a full medical support
team which will enable us to confirm whether the venue is suitable for
2008.
"The camp will allow us to test out our protocols and monitor how the
athletes adjust to a number of aspects, including travel, climate, food
and culture.
"On top of testing out the facilities, our prime focus now is training
ahead of the World Championships in Durban at the end of the year," Tim
Reddish added.
