Sprinter Ian Jones wins Rising Star award
Rising athletics star Ian Jones won the top honour at the Nationwide DSE Sports Awards, claiming the Rising Star award, which included a bursary of £6,000.
East Cheshire Harrier Ian Jones, 16, had been taking part in non-disability athletes up to last year but after discovering that the disability in his feet was irreparable, he went on to win gold in the T44 100m and 200m at the British Open in Manchester in June.
Ian Jones then represented GB at the IPC World Championships in Assen.
Ian Jones finished fifth in the 200m behind South African superstar Oscar Pistorius and clearly has a successful future ahead.
Elsewhere, Cornwall table tennis player David Wetherill took the national sportsperson prize and the South West regional award with the national volunteer award going to Colchester Phoenix swimming coach Maggie Hargraves.
Winning athlete and volunteers from all over the country, received bursaries totalling £22,300 to help with the development of disability sports talent.
