England for semi-finals of European Blind Championships
England were glad to find that Greece's 2-1 win over Portugal on
Tuesday handed them a semi-final spot in the European Blind
Championships.
After losing to Greece 2-0 and beating Portugal 3-1 in their group
matches, England needed the Portuguese to lose in order to progress to
the last four. The team are likely to meet Spain in Thursday
semi-finals.
Manager Tony Larkin said: "Up against Spain, we know that if we don't play to our potential, we stand no chance."
Cyprus withdrew from the tournament on Friday, leaving England, Greece
and Portugal to battle it out in Group Two for two qualification spots.
With all three countries awarded an automatic win against Cyprus and
England losing their opener, Tony Larkin's men were dependent on Greece
winning their final group tie.
"We watched Greece secure our place and there were a few fingernails
being bitten when Portugal pulled it back to 2-1," Tony Larkin added.
If England finish in the top three at the tournament, they will secure qualification for World Cup in Argentina summer 2006.
