Disabled athlete David Weir wins 5,000m wheelchair race
Disabled British athlete David Weir was the winner of the 5,000m wheelchair race at the Good Luck Beijing 2008 China Athletics Open that was held on Saturday.
28-year-old Weir was the first sportsperson from the UK to compete in the Bird's Nest stadium, which is being tested in readiness for the Olympic Games and the Paralympics later this year.
A proud David Weir said afterwards: "The crowd was great, not capacity as the top tier is not yet open, but there was a brilliant atmosphere."
Weir has made a splendid recovery after last season when he missed a lot the action due to glandular fever. He made his return in style with gold medals in the 400 and 1500m at the recent Paralympic World Cup in Manchester.
David Weir added: "It was a really valuable experience for me to compete here and now I'm even more excited about competing in the Paralympics."
