British disabled table tennis players impress at Commonwealth Games
British disabled table tennis quartet of players Cathy Mitton, Sue
Gilroy, Claire Harris and Sara Head have continued to impress in the
Commonwealth Games and defending champion Gilroy, of England, and
Wales' Harris both finished their round-robin phase without being
beaten.
Cathy Mitton, for England, also came top of her qualifying group and
Welsh athlete Sara Head was second in her pool to the Nigerian Vivian
Ozurumba.
The quarterfinals of the event will be held on Friday.
Sue Gilroy was in good form with three straight-sets victories over
Australian Joy Boyd, Malaysian Chen Yen Chang and Rose Chesang from
Kenya.
Claire Harris was triumphant over Ghin Chu Pua of Malaysia, South
African Rose Riese and Australian Jane Wallis, also in straight sets.
Cathy Mitton beat Australian player Catherine Morrow and South African
Alett Moll, but she lost 13-11 7-11 13-11 15-13 5-11 in an exciting
match with Philomena Konwea from Nigeria.
Sara Head beat English player Jane Campbell 7-11 11-9 11-9 12-14 11-8
and Palesa Lelakane of Lesotho, but then she lost to Vivian Ozurumba in
the pool decider.
