British disabled athlete Sophie Hancock beats discus world record
British disabled athlete Sophie Hancock carried on with her preparations for next month's World Paralympic Championships in very impressive style when she beat the F40 discus world record.
Sophie Hancock, 19, and from Horwich, threw 20.00m at the inaugural Throwfest challenge at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on Saturday and her throw beat the existing record of 19.23m held by American athlete Jill Kennedy.
The International Paralympic Committee must now officially ratify the throw as a new world record.
"I've been throwing pretty well in training, but I didn't expect to throw further than the world record," admitted Sophie Hancock.
"I'd had a couple of 18m throws already and I thought I had managed around 19m but when they said it was 20m I was shocked," Sophie Hancock added.
Sophie Hancock returns to the live action this coming weekend at the European Dwarf Championships in Belfast along with Kim Minett, who is also included in the World Championship team.
