Amputee swimmer Natalie Du Toit for Olympics

paralympics Disabled swimmer Natalie Du Toit, who is an amputee, will be taking part in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games it has been announced, following her selection to be part of South Africa's team.

No female amputee has ever been a contestant in the Olympic Games before, although it is possible that table tennis player Natalia Partyka, who has an arm amputated, could take part for Poland in the Beijing event.

24-year-old Natalie Du Toit qualified by coming in fourth place in the 10km open water world championships in Seville in May.

Du Toit will compete in the open water race in the Beijing Games before being in six more events at the Paralympics.

Natalie Du Toit, whose left leg was amputated after a car accident seven years ago, admitted she was surprised to be allowed to take part in the Olympic open water event and she said: "It's been a dream for me since I was six years old to go to the Olympic Games and to finally have that dream realised is something massive for me."
