Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin out of World Cup due to injury

andriyvoroninUkraine striker Andriy Voronin will be out of the rest of the World Cup after he injured his thigh against Switzerland, team officials said on Wednesday.

However, Andriy Voronin, 26, will be staying at the team's base while they prepare for Friday's quarterfinal against Italy in Hamburg.

"Andriy is distraught that the World Cup is over for him," said Ukraine spokesman Igor Mirochnichenko.

Andriy Voronin has started all four of Ukraine's matches at the event.

Ukraine qualified for the last eight after they beat Switzerland on penalties following a 0-0 draw in Cologne, however, Andriy Voronin was substituted 10 minutes before the end of extra time.

Oleg Blokhin's team were mercilessly defeated 4-0 in their opening group game against Spain, but they managed to bounce back to qualify as Group H runners-up.

Andriy Voronin had played as a key member of the Ukrainian team that hit back from an opening 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Spain to get through to the last 16.
