Serbia and Montenegro defender Nemanja Vidic is out of World Cup
Serbia and Montenegro defender Nemanja Vidic has had to be taken out of the World Cup because of a knee problem.
Nemanja Vidic, 24, who normally plays for Manchester United, injured his left knee ligaments in Monday's training session and Serbia team doctor Aleksandar Boskovic said that the injury would mean Nemanja Vidic couldn't play "for several weeks."
This now leaves Serbia with a 21-man squad following Dusan Petkovic, son of manager Ilija, also leaving the group before the competition even started.
Nemanja Vidic had missed Serbia's opening Group C defeat to Holland due to a one-match suspension for a red card received in a qualifying game.
Aleksandar Boskovic commented: "He will miss the World Cup, even if we reach the final."
NemanjaVidic, who joined Manchester United in January for £7m, was a vital member of the Serbia defence that had conceded only one goal in their 10 qualifying matches, and after Dusan Petkovic left the squad on the eve of the event to avoid his father attracting media criticism, they have no natural replacement for him.
