Marco Materazzi says Zinedine Zidane deserved the Golden Ball Award Marco Materazzi says that Zinedine Zidane, who butted him with his head, should nevertheless be allowed to keep the Golden Ball Award for the World Cup's best player and that he supports him.
France captain Zinedine Zidane, 34, was dismissed in extra-time of the final after he assaulted Italian player Marco Materazzi following heated words between them.
Fifa is investigating the trouble that occurred and Fifa president Sepp Blatter has hinted Zinedine Zidane could have the Golden Ball award taken back from him.
But Marco Materazzi said: "Zidane has won that award because of what he has done on the pitch - he was the best."
The World Cup final was Zinedine Zidane's last match before he retired.
"I have always admired Zidane," Marco Materazzi added.
Zinedine Zidane has apologised for his action but does not regret reacting that way, alleging on television that Marco Materazzi provoked him by insulting both his mother and sister.
