Host Germany open the World Cup 2006 with Pele and Claudia Schiffer attending
Hosts Germany will open World Cup 2006, which is the eighteenth time for this internationally prestigious tournament, on Friday after the opening ceremony in Munich.
Germany play against Costa Rica in the opening game of the event at 1700 BST at the 59,000-capacity Allianz Arena and more than one-and-a-half billion are expected to watch the opening of the World Cup on television.
The crowning ceremonies will take place after the final in Berlin on 9 July, with England, who play Paraguay on Saturday, among the favourites tipped to win.
The first game will have an opening ceremony before it at 1520 BST in which more than 150 players who have won the World Cup, including Pele and Diego Maradona, will be on show.
Pele, who was a World Cup winner with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970, will be carrying the trophy on to the pitch of the Munich stadium, and will be accompanied by German supermodel Claudia Schiffer.
The second match of the World Cup is Poland v Ecuador, which will take place after the Germany game on Friday, kicking-off at 2000 BST in Gelsenkirchen.
World Cup organisers are expecting about one million people to visit Germany for the event, with as many as 100,000 of the football fans coming from the UK.
