Greece suspended by Fifa due to government interference Fifa has suspended Greece and its member clubs from international competition due to government interference in football and it said the Hellenic Football Federation had broken rules on "the independence of members and decision-making in each country".
This now means that Greek clubs and officials are banned from all European competitions and it puts into jeopardy Steve McClaren's first game in charge of England - a friendly against Greece on 16 August.
The ruling will be in place with "immediate effect and until further notice", according to a Fifa statement.
Fifa said that it had issued several warnings to the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) to ensure, that by a 15 July deadline, the running of football in Greece would be free from political movement but the warnings were ignored.
Under the ban, the likes of AEK Athens, Olympiakos and Panathinaikos will not be allowed to take part in the Champions League or Uefa Cup next season.
The Football Association's director of communications Adrian Bevington said that he would seek clarification on the matter to find out if England's friendly against Greece at Old Trafford will take place or not.
