Germany thrash Ecuador and finish top of World Cup Group A World Cup hosts Germany claimed three wins out of three when they beat Ecuador to finish top of Group A.
Miroslav Klose, now with four goals, became the leading scorer in the event and put the Germans in the lead early on when he rifled home from close range.
If England can now avoid defeat against Sweden in their Group B tie, they will be playing Ecuador again in the last 16 on Sunday.
The German team were clearly taking the threat of a possible match against England more seriously than Ecuador and, although they had already qualified, they played at full strength.
Having started the World Cup with some uncertainty over their prospects, Germany's qualification for the knockout stages has been incredibly easy.
Germany may not have faced any sort of proper test yet, having played against a poor Costa Rica, a terrible Poland and now the easily defeated Ecuador, but they have beaten every team they have faced, and not once seriously looked in any danger of not getting all three points they needed.
