Footballer Robert Pires still hopeful for national team
France discard Robert Pires is insisting he is still available for
selection for the national team but doubts he will be picked for the
2006 World Cup in Germany.
Robert Pires has not played for Les Bleus for more than a year following a bust-up with coach Raymond Domenech.
However, the 31-year-old Arsenal player admits he misses playing for
France who earlier this month qualified for next year's tournament.
"The French team is like a drug," Pires told L'Equipe. "When
you have won 79 caps you still want more. I want to win an 80th. I am
still thinking about it."
Robert Pires admits he will be disappointed if he isn't picked for Germany.
"I will be disappointed," he said. "That much is clear. But I will not go to Germany (as a spectator).
"I would prefer to go to the beach and relax with my family."
Robert Pires admits he regrets the strong words used when he fell out with Domenech last year.
"I had not started the season well and I also had my divorce to deal with," said Robert Pires.
"Certainly my words were clumsy. I take responsibility for them and don't look for excuses. It was not good, that's all."
Robert Pires admits that he has not yet decided to leave
Arsenal - he has been offered an extra year on his contract when he
wanted two or three.
"I agreed with Arsene Wenger to start the season and to have
another meeting in January. Then I will see if the club's ambitions
please me or not," said the former Metz and Marseille player.
"People are asking a lot of me and I want to improve in my
areas where I am weak such as competitiveness and working on the
defensive aspect to my game."
