Sven-Goran Eriksson praises his victorious team Frank
Lampard scored a late winning goal with a stunning volley at Old
Trafford last night and ensured that England beat Poland and finished
top of their World Cup qualifying group.
The Chelsea
midfielder converted a cross from Michael Owen who gave England a
44th-minute lead with his 22nd goal for his country, and equalled the
tally of Gary Lineker.
Poland
managed to equalise in the first half injury-time through Tomasz
Frankowski but England, inspired by the return of Manchester United
striker Wayne Rooney after a one-game suspension, definitely deserved
their win. The team's performance was so much better than last
Saturday's match against Austria, and should enhance their chance of
favourable seeding in December's draw.
After it was all over, England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson was full of praise for his team.
"I
think there was a good attitude out there today, we needed to turn it
around after we started the season so-so but if we keep the spirit and
quality it is very difficult to beat us," Sven-Goran Eriksson said.
"We
have won the group, we lost very few points in the 10 matches and I'm
extremely happy for the boys. We have done a great job in these nine or
10 days," Sven-Goran Eriksson added.
