Ecuador World Cup football coach Luis Fernando Suarez revels in their win
Ecuador football coach Luis Fernando Suarez says his team are giving it their best to win Group A after their historic triumph.
A 3-0 win over Costa Rica clenched their place in round two for the first time, and a draw with Germany on Tuesday will see Ecuador top the group.
"Today is a very important day for Ecuador, a historic day," said Luis Fernando Suarez.
"Our idea is to finish as the best team in the first round and then do the same in the second round and continue to improve as much as possible," Luis Fernando Suarez added.
In spite of a seven-hour time difference, football fans in the Ecuador capital Quito swarmed out on to the streets after the match, blowing car horns and jubilantly waving the country's yellow, red and blue flags.
flags.
"It's a day of celebration," said Colombian-born Luis Fernando Suarez.
"We have never qualified for the second stage and this is a fantastic achievement for us."
The group winners will now play the runners-up, rather than the top team, from England's Group B and Ecuador will finish top ahead of fellow qualifiers Germany with a draw in their third group match because of higher goal difference.
