Newcastle goalie Shay Given has groin surgery
Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given will probably be away from the action for six weeks after having an operation on his groin in Germany on Tuesday.
Republic of Ireland international keeper Shay Given, 31, has not taken part in a game since Newcastle lost 5-1 to Manchester United on 23 February.
Dr Ulrike Muschaweck, who has also treated Michael Owen and Alan Shearer, will be in charge of the surgery on Shay Given.
A statement by Shay Given's football club explained: "Shay Given is expected to make a full recovery after surgery and will be absent for a six-week period."
Shay Given had already been sidelined by a similar problem at the start of the season. It has bothered Shay Given when he has been playing recently and his injury has meant he has been restricted to just 24 appearances.
Shay Given is vice-captain of both his country and Newcastle but Steve Harper is acting in his place at present.
