Chelsea footballer Michael Essien signs five-year deal
Chelsea footballer Michael Essien has signed a new five-year deal, and in so doing has followed in the footsteps of goalkeeper Petr Cech and defender Wayne Bridge, who both also recently signed new contracts with the same club.
25-year-old Essien comes from Ghana originally and plays in the position of midfielder. He has been an excellent player since he first joined Chelsea from Lyon for £24m in 2005.
Michael Essien was really pleased to have renewed his contract and said: "I am very happy here. We have a great team and fantastic fans who have always made me welcome."
Petr Cech has just signed a five-year contract with Chelsea too, and Wayne Bridge also signed a new four-year deal just last week.
Scolari, who became the new Chelsea manager this month, is also happy that Michael Essien has decided to stay on with the team, and he said: "I have not been here long but it is clear to me that Michael Essien is one of the best midfield players in the world."
