Russia women's volleyball team are world champions
Russia are the women's world volleyball champions after they became the first team in over 18 months to defeat Brazil and to attain the title of "volleyball world champions" is one of the highest honours in international team sports.
The Russian team outlasted the South American side in a final-set tie-break to claim gold in Japan.
The 15-25, 25-23, 25-18, 20-25, 15-13 win ended Brazil's hopes of gaining a first world title.
This was the first time Russia have ever won the event, although the Soviet Union had previously dominated the sport and won five times.
The Volleyball World Championships are the first and most important world volleyball event created by the Federation Internationale de Volleyball.
The first men's championship was held in Prague in 1949, and the first women's in Moscow in 1952.
In the volleyball world, the World Championships have the same tradition and prestige as soccer's World Cup.
The men's tournament is also being held in Japan and will run from 17 November until 3 December.
