Rugby star Jonah Lomu is making a deal with Gold Coast Titans
Former rugby union international Jonah Lomu has been negotiating a one-year deal with new NRL club Gold Coast Titans.
Jonah Lomu, 31, who won 73 All Black caps, had a kidney transplant in 2004 but recently had a spell playing forCardiff.
"From our point of view we won't get a more devastating player, despite his setbacks," said Titans chief executive Michael Searle and he added:
"I've got no doubt (conditioner) Billy Johnstone and (coach) John Cartwright can facilitate representative status."
Michael Searle also rejected claims it would be a risk for the new club, who have already signed up Wallaby union international Mat Rogers for the 2008 season.
"He's the biggest name in world rugby," Michael Searle said.
"At his peak he was one of the most devastating players in the game. From a financial point of view, this isn't a massive risk for us," Michael Searle added.
News reports in Australia say Jonah Lomu's contract would be worth less than A$100,000 (approximately £40,000), keeping the team within the NRL salary cap.
