Rugby Football Union deny Bernard Laporte's dope claims
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has totally rejected claims by French coach Bernard Laporte that English rugby may have a problem with drug abuse in some quarters.
Bernard Laporte had said that France has tight doping rules, although he "could not be sure" about the rugby players in England or New Zealand. "There is regular monitoring in France," Bernard Laporte said.
Bernard Laporte added: "The player cannot dope himself - well, he can, but he will be caught. But what is happening in New Zealand or in England? You cannot be sure of anything."
RFU tournaments director Terry Burwell responded in the Daily Mail newspaper: "We're confident we have a very robust programme,
"We're the only Union with a full-time doping officer, which leaves no doubt as to how seriously we take it."
Terry Burwell added that UK Sport's testing programme was in addition to that of the RFU.
