NRL defends drugs policy after Andrew Johns' confession
Australia's National Rugby League (NRL) has stuck by its drugs testing policy following Andrew Johns' shocking confession to having used illegal substances.
Andrew Johns, 33, who retired in April due to a neck injury, has admitted to a long-term drug and alcohol problem throughout his rugby career, and he had been arrested and cautioned in London on Sunday for possession of an ecstasy tablet.
NRL boss David Gallop said: "Our policy wasn't in the right shape. But we've put in a lot work with the players' association and we've got a far more robust testing regime now."
Andrew Johns had explained how his impressive-looking career had masked problems with depression away from the sport and he even revealed how he had avoided being caught by the doping testers.
Andrew Johns, who was tested 17 times in his career, said: "People probably ask how you avoid the drug testers but if you play Friday night, don't train Saturday, Sunday, then generally it's out of your system by Monday."
Neil Halpin, the doctor at Andrew Johns' former rugby club Newcastle, said he knew about Andrew Johns' drug and alcohol problems since 2002.
