Monty Betham quits rugby league for boxing
Wakefield captain Monty Betham has left rugby league to begin a new career in boxing.
Monty Betham, 28, joined from New Zealand Warriors a year ago and played in all but two of Wakefield's 28 rugby league games.
"It is a blow but it was anticipated and it now allows one of our young players to step up to the mark," Wildcats chief executive Steve Ferres said.
Jason Demetriou, who was captain before Monty Betham's joined the team, will take replace him go back to his old role.
Jason Demetriou was the club captain last season and coach John Kear said: "Jason's appointment as team captain is just reward for his outstanding contribution to the team during the relegation survival run-in last season.
"He demonstrated for everyone to see an immense desire to keep this club in Super League.
"He is an excellent competitor, an excellent role-model and I am sure he will make a great success of his new role."
Monty Betham had missed just two Super League games in 2006 because of a two-match ban imposed on him for fighting.
