Former Australia rugby captain Andrew Johns retires
Former Australia rugby league captain and scrumhalf Andrew Johns has had to announce his retirement from the sport following medical advice about a serious neck injury.
After receiving CAT scans, Andrew Johns, 32, was informed that he ran the risk of a "catastrophic" spinal injury if he keeps playing rugby.
Andrew Johns had aggravated a neck injury he already had when he collided with teammates whilst training with his club Newcastle last Thursday.
Newcastle rugby club doctor Neil Halpin said the CAT scans showed a previously undetected disc injury, which, although it gave no pain right now, posed a serious risk in future.
"I'm still in shock. It was really tough telling my family," Andrew Johns said, and added: "I made an emotional call to my brother Matthew and it was even tougher talking to the (Newcastle) players this afternoon."
Specialist John Yeo also saw Andrew Johns and he said: "Talking to Neil and the professor (Yeo) I realised how lucky I am that I haven't had a serious neck injury or a serious accident and could be in a wheelchair."
