England women's rugby tour opens with a win

England women started their New Zealand tour with an impressive eight-try victory over Manusina Samoa in Auckland.

England scored first-half tries through Kim Shaylor, who grabbed a hat-trick, Sue Day and Charlotte Barras.

England added further tries after the break through Selena Rudge, Danielle Waterman and Charlotte Barras, while Karen Andrew kicked 13 points.

"We played very well against a highly physical and strong outfit," said coach Geoff Richards.

"Our tight five scrummaged well and there was some good flowing rugby coming from the backs. It was an impressive team performance all round."

England next face an Invitational New Zealand XV on 19 October, before two Tests against reigning world champions New Zealand on 22 and 26 October.

England: Day; Barras, Staniford, Oliver, Shaylor; Andrew, Yapp; Clarke, Garnett, Gray; Sutton, Vickers; Baker, Clayton, Jones. Replacements: Rudge, Huxford, Alphonsi, Spencer, Waterman, Turner, Massarella.
