Australian full-back Matt Burke to retire due to injury
Australian full-back Matt Burke, who has been playing for Newcastle, has been forced to retire from rugby because he has not been able to recover from a very bad knee injury.
Burke, 35, who was a World Cup winner in 1999, has been sidelined for the last seven months because of a torn cruciate ligament he had suffered.
Burke had a very impressive career record having won 81 caps for the Wallabies during his 10 years as an international rugby player and his total of 878 points was the fifth highest ever when he previously retired from Test rugby in June 2004.
Matt Burke suffered the injury, which has finished his career whilst playing against Bath last October, and he has now accepted that he will not take part in the sport again.
Burke is reported to have said: "I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Newcastle. I look back on my four seasons and hopefully say that I contributed to the team's performance and provided some enjoyment for the fans."
