All Blacks player Chris Masoe fined for assaulting a man at Christchurch bar
All Blacks player Chris Masoe was fined NZ$3,000 (£1,000) by the New Zealand Rugby Union after he was found guilty of assaulting a man at a Christchurch bar and the incident also involved ex-All Blacks captain Tana Umaga.
Chris Masoe is reported to have punched a man in the jaw after tripping over his legs at about 7am on Sunday and Tana Umaga is then said to have grabbed a woman's handbag and hit Masoe twice across the head, at which point Masoe is alleged to have burst into tears.
Both rugby players were out in Christchurch after the Canterbury Crusaders beat their Wellington Hurricanes' side at the Super 14 final.
The New Zealand Rugby Union agreed to accept Tana Umaga's word that he was merely trying to resolve the situation, and decided he had no case to answer.
Chris Masoe admitted his actions and apologised on Tuesday.
"I accept that it was totally inappropriate to behave the way I did and regret that it happened," Chris Masoe said in a statement.
