Carolina Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup for ice hockey
Goalkeeper Cam Ward managed an incredible 22 saves as Carolina Hurricanes beat Edmonton 3-1 in game seven of the NHL finals and won their first Stanley Cup.
Carolina Hurricanes went into a 2-0 lead in Raleigh with goals from Aaron Ward (1:26) and Frantisek Kaberle (24: 18) but Edmonton Oilers fought back to score through Fernando Pisano in the 42nd minute to give them a chance still.
But then a Justin Williams empty-net strike on 59 minutes clenched triumph for the Carolina Hurricanes in front of their own fans.
After leading the best-of-seven series 3-1 and having let two chances to hoist the Cup slip through their fingers, the Carolina Hurricanes did not waste their third and last chance.
Cam Ward, 22, inspired them, and he had won the Conn Smythe Trophy after being named as the most valuable player of this season's NHL play-offs and Ward has become the first rookie netminder since Patrick Roy in 1986 to lead his team to win a Stanley Cup.
