West Indies cricketer Marlon Samuels banned from bowling
Jamaican cricketer Marlon Samuels, who plays for the West Indies, has been banned from taking part as a bowler in international cricket due to a suspect action.
Marlon Samuels, 27, was informed that his arm straightens by more than the 15 degrees, which is allowed, when he bowls. This had been discovered when Dr Mark King at the National Cricket Academy at Loughborough University had carried out an independent analysis of his bowling.
Dr King's investigation showed that Marlon Samuels straightened his elbow by an average of 27 degrees when bowling off-breaks, and by nearly 35 degrees with his faster bowling deliveries.
The umpires Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar had reported Marlon Samuels, who mainly plays as a batsman, in January, after they had watched his bowling technique during the third Test against South Africa in Durban.
Marlon Samuels is still allowed to play as a batsman, and he has the right of appeal against the bowling ban.
