Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid fail at new record in Lahore
Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid have failed in their attempt at
setting a new world record opening stand in Tests on the final day of
the drawn first Test in Lahore.
Virender Sehwag fell for 254 as India came off for bad light on 410-1 on a final day in which just 14 balls had been bowled.
Virender Sehwag was caught off the seamer Rana Naved-ul-Hasan with the score on 410 and the match ended soon afterwards.
The pair was just three runs short of the 50-year-old record set by two other Indian cricketers.
The record was made when in 1956, Indian openers Vinoo Mankad and Pankaj Roy put on 413 against New Zealand.
Pakistan declared at 679-7 in their first innings - and with Virender
Sehwag and Rahul Dravid finding batting so easy the match had been
written off as a draw but after most of the final day had been lost to
rain, the Indian pair agreed to bat in bad light.
If they had not been 10 runs short of the record, they would probably not have bothered.
Cricket fans who had stayed patiently in the hope of getting some of
the sport were soon rewarded by an action-packed over from Rana
Naved-ul-Hasan, the second to be bowled.
Virender Sehwag leg-glanced for two for his 250 and then hit a spanking drive through the covers for four.
Virender Sehwag repeatedly attempted to edge the bowler over the slip
cordon for four but he missed twice and the third time could only edge
to wicket keeper Kamran Akmal.
Then three balls later, the light once again became poor and the
umpires called for a slightly early tea, but there was no further play
after that.
