South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs has appeal rejected
South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs' appeal against a ban for making racist comments has been rejected and Cricket South Africa has withdrawn its own hearing against him and agrees with the ban.
However, appeals commissioner Richie Benaud, who heard the appeal on Wednesday, said: "I certainly do not consider Herschelle to be a racist".
The appeal was heard at a teleconference in which Herschelle Gibbs, International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Chris Broad and their legal representatives were all involved.
The ban had come about because Herschelle Gibbs had been heard on a stump microphone making comments about Pakistan cricket fans at the first Test at Centurion, and he had made the remarks after members of the crowd insulted fellow player Paul Harris.
Herschelle Gibbs' representatives argued that the stump microphones should have been switched off as outlined in an ICC memo and so there was no case to answer, however, Richie Benaud, didn't agree this was a valid reason for an appeal.
