Pakistan cricketers distracted by religion in World Cup claim
Cricketers in the Pakistan team allowed their religious convictions to distract them during the World Cup, Pervez Mir their media manager has claimed and he explained to a performance review meeting that the players were not focused on the game, as they should have been.
Pakistan did very badly and were eliminated at the first round stage after being beaten by West Indies and Ireland as well, which came as a surprise.
Pervez Mir said: "I told the committee that the players, rather than pray privately, tried to make it a public spectacle," and he added that at one point some of the players went as far as to gather to pray in the galley of an aircraft rather than do so where they were sitting.
This is nothing new in many ways because batsman Mohammad Yousuf, a former Christian, made headlines in 2005 when he announced he had converted to Islam, and was disowned by his mother for this.
Last October, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf told the cricketers in the Pakistan team not to make a public exhibition of their beliefs.
