New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori injures ankle
New Zealand cricket team have hit a big problem as they get ready for Tuesday's first Twenty20 international against England because their captain Daniel Vettori hurt his ankle whilst training.
Daniel Vettori, 29, who plays as a spinner, has injured his right ankle and will need a lot of treatment before he will be fit enough to play again, and a spokesman for New Zealand explained: "A decision on his availability will be made next week."
However, faced with the strong possibility that Daniel Vettori won't be able to take part, off-spinner Jeetan Patel has been called up as cover for the injured player.
Brendon McCullum will act as captain if Daniel Vettori is ruled out of playing.
Daniel Vettori took over as captain from Stephen Fleming in 2007 and he guided New Zealand to the semi-finals of the World Twenty20, where they were defeated by Pakistan.
