International Cricket Council to improve drug-testing
In the wake of the embarrassment that ensued after Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, who continued to play for Pakistan a few months after testing positive for nandrolone, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that it will be improving its drug-testing methods in readiness for the World Cup.
The ICC says it will be target-testing individual cricketers as well as making random tests on other players.
Chief executive Malcolm Speed explained that: "We want to make absolutely sure players are free from banned substances."
Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif had tested positive for the steroid nandrolone last September but the long suspensions they received for this were quashed on appeal because they said they had not knowingly taken the drug.
Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif will now miss the World Cup not because of drugs offences but due to injuries.
The ICC said that cricket players suspected of taking drugs would not get the approval for the World Cup, which starts on 13 March.
