International Cricket Council says umpire Darrell Hair offered to quit for money
The International Cricket Council has said that umpire Darrell Hair offered to quit in exchange for $500,000 (£266,000).
Further that Darrell Hair, 53, made this offer in an e-mail to the game's governing body in the wake of Sunday's ball-tampering scandal which ended the fourth Test at The Oval.
ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed explained to a media conference in London that Darrell Hair had been under great stress but he maintained he was satisfied the umpire had not made the offer with any "dishonest, underhand or malicious intent".
Malcolm Speed added: "He was seeking to find a solution that was in the interests of the game."
Darrell Hair and fellow umpire Billy Doctrove penalised Pakistan five runs and allowed England to choose a replacement ball after they decided that Pakistan had tampered with the one, which had suddenly started reverse-swinging after 56 overs.
Then when Pakistan initially refused to come back after the tea break in protest at this, the umpiress ruled that they had forfeited the game.
Darrell Hair is hoping to carry on with his work and said in a statement: "This correspondence was composed after a very difficult time and was revoked by myself two days later after a period of serious consideration."
