Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh banned for 11 matches
Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has been banned for 11-matches in the Indian Premier League following his plea of guilty to slapping compatriot player Sree Santh.
This ban will mean he is no longer involved in the competition unless his team, the Mumbai Indians, can get through to the semi-finals.
27-year-old Harbhajan Singh will also lose his match fees for the whole tournament.
The incident that Singh was charged with happened in a game last Friday between Mumbai Indians and the Kings XI Punjab.
Paceman Sree Santh was seen crying and IPL commissioner and tournament organiser Lalit Modi stated afterwards that Singh was entirely to blame for the assault.
Harbhajan apologised and said: "Whatever happened and whatever I did was grossly wrong."
The Board of Control for Cricket in India is going to take separate action against Harbhajan because he is a centrally-contracted player, and this means he will be charged with a level four offence under the International Cricket Council's code of conduct.
