England cricketer Kevin Pietersen is coming home from Pakistan

England batsman Kevin Pietersen is returning home from the tour of Pakistan due to a rib injury he sustained and will miss the last three one-day internationals. 25-year-old Kevin Pietersen aggravated a previous problem in practice before struggling through the opening two one-dayers.

But he came off before the end of Monday's defeat and has failed to get better despite having a cortisone injection.

kevinpietersen No replacement will be called up for Kevin Pietersen who joins Michael Vaughan and Ashley Giles in leaving the tour early.

Captain Michael Vaughan struggled through the Test series - which England lost 2-0 - with a knee problem, while a hip problem forced left-arm spinner Ashley Giles to return home before the one-dayers.

Those two cricketers are confident they will be ready for the tour of India, which begins in February, and Kevin Pietersen is hoping to join them.

Kevin Pietersen said: "It's very disappointing to be leaving the England team at this time as I was looking forward to a strong one-day series.

"I hate missing matches and, despite trying to play the first couple of one-day games, the pain was just too great.

"I certainly wouldn't want to let my team-mates down due to injury, whether it is with the bat or in the field, so the only choice available to me is to rest the injury with a view to a full recovery in time for India."

England team doctor Peter Gregory believes Kevin Pietersen will be ready to return with the team to India on 13 February.

"Scans taken after the first one-day match showed no fracture but demonstrated a stress lesion and, despite passing a fitness test ahead of the second one-day match, Kevin suffered intolerable pain throughout," the doctor explained.

"A stress lesion of this nature is likely to require four to six weeks rest but it is expected that Kevin will make a full recovery in time for the tour to India."
