Cricketer Marlon Samuels under investigation
Cricketer Marlon Samuels is under investigation by the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) in regard to his alleged involvement with an Indian bookmaker earlier this year.
The International Cricket Council's anti-corruption officials decided they had enough suspicious evidence to launch a probe and the WICB has been asked to get back to them with their findings by 31 January 2008.
Marlon Samuels, 26, is said to have given team information to the bookmaker while the West Indies team were touring in India.
Two sections of the Code of Conduct rules are being looked into with the first being the receipt by a player of "any money, benefit or other reward (whether financial or otherwise)" which could bring him or the game of cricket into disrepute".
Marlon Samuels would receive a minimum two years ban and a maximum for life plus an unlimited fine if he is declared guilty.
The second section is in relation to the "conduct which, in the opinion of the (ICC) Executive Board... is prejudicial to the interests of the game of cricket," and if guilty of this he could get a minimum ban of one year and a maximum of five, as well as a large fine.
Marlon Samuels denies any wrongdoing and is maintaining his innocence.
