Cricketer Andrew Symonds racially abused by Indian fans
Australian cricketer of West Indian origin, Andrew Symonds has been abused in a racist way by four Indian cricket fans police reports say. The fans have been charged with allegedly making monkey gestures and chanting, which Andrew Symonds complained about.
The four fans were thrown out from a one-day international match in Mumbai on Wednesday and officials say that photos of them making offensive gestures to Andrew Symonds as he went to play have been given to police.
Batsman Andrew Symonds is the only mixed race cricketer in the Australian team, and he first played on an international level in 1998.
The four fans, including a woman, have been charged with harassment but have now been released on bail to appear in court at a date yet to be announced.
It has been suggested that the fans picked on Andrew Symonds because he had been exchanging heated words with Indian bowlers Harbhajan Singh and Shantakumaran Sreesanth.
