Cricket legend Derek Shackleton dies aged 83
Legendary ex-cricketer Derek Shackleton, who was in his time Hampshire's best ever wicket-taker and was nicknamed "Shack", has died at the age of 83.
Derek Shackleton was born in Todmorden, Yorkshire, and he became selected and named as one of Wisden's "Five Cricketers of the Year" in 1959, along with Hampshire fellow cricketer Roy Marshall.
Derek Shackleton took 2,857 first-class wickets in his extraordinary career, including 2,669 for Hampshire, and played for Hampshire county cricket club from 1948 to 1969.
Derek Shackleton also took over 100 wickets in 20 consecutive seasons, including 172 in 1962, and he guided Hampshire to their first Championship title in 1961.
As a bowler Derek Shackleton was known for his accuracy, and he also played in seven Test matches for England, claiming 18 wickets.
After announcing his retirement from professional cricket playing, Derek Shackleton became the coach at Canford School in Dorset.
